About Online Group Seminars

Want to start telling video stories? This course is your guide to shooting, producing and sharing video stories. Along the way, you'll get personalized coaching and feedback on your work.

In this unique online seminar, you will learn how to capture, edit, produce and share videos online, on mobile and on social media. You also will get a working knowledge of how to use consumer cameras, smart phone cameras and audio equipment in the field so you don't have to rely on traditional edit bays and TV trucks.

While we won't cover the fundamentals of newsgathering, writing, editing and storytelling, we will show you quick and easy ways to capture, edit and share videos from the field while maintaining the integrity of video storytelling.

Live Events will be held on Mondays from noon - 1:30 p.m. Eastern.

  • Week 1: Monday, May 1, noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern

  • Week 2: Monday, May 8, noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern

  • Week 3: Thursday, May 11, noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern (Note: change in day)

  • How to capture, edit and publish video stories
  • How to tell good video stories, find focus and use the five motivators to tell a story (based on Al Tompkins' book, "Aim for the Heart")
  • How to use simple cameras and audio equipment available in the market to shoot high quality video
  • How to create your YouTube or Vimeo channel to share video
  • How to use cloud sharing to quickly transfer video files
  • How to livestream video using available online tools
  • How to record, edit and share audio using Audacity
  • How to quickly edit video using Adobe premiere, YouTube or basic software
Who should take this course:

Reporters, producers and photojournalists who want to start telling video stories, as well as students and others who are interested in journalistic standards for capturing and editing video.

Course Instructor:

Vidisha Priyanka

Vidisha Priyanka is currently working with Poynter NewsU as an Interactive Learning Manager. Her work entails helping to create courses and other training, as well as teaching in Poynter in-person seminars.

Vidisha worked as planning editor for digital video at TBO.com, media partner of The Tampa Tribune and WFLA-TV. She also worked as an Audience Editor and News and Special Projects producer for almost 10 years and helped focus resources on serving news audience. Vidisha has a master's degree in journalism from the University of South Florida and teaches as an adjunct professor at USF.
