About Certificate Programs
Certificates of proficiency are designed to measure your knowledge of essential skills or information. To receive a certificate, take the NewsU courses associated with that certificate program and then successfully complete the online assessment for each course. Once you've passed all the assessments, you will receive your certificate from Poynter's NewsU.
A certificate in "Basic Reporting and Writing" shows that you have a solid foundation in the essential journalism skills of reporting and writing.
To earn the certificate, you must pass the assessments for each of the courses in this program. Questions in each assessment will cover the content from the course, so we encourage you to work through each course before you take the assessment. You'll have three chances to pass each assessment, so you can always review the material again if you don't pass the first time.
Unlike traditional quizzes and activities from Poynter's NewsU, these assessments won't tell you the answers. You'll simply get a score when you complete the assessment. So make sure you study hard when you take the courses.
NOTE: NewsU Certificate Programs are inclusive of the required courses and their assessments. Courses taken individually will not count toward the certificate.
Who Benefits From This Certificate:
Newsroom professionals, students, community journalists, bloggers, communications professionals or anyone—with or without formal journalism training—who wants to distinguish themselves in the eyes of editors and publishers. The certificate also can be used by editors who want to assess the skills of citizen contributors, as well as educators who are looking for ways to evaluate their students' understanding of key journalism concepts.
