About Online Group Seminars

In an online group seminar, you will gather with other participants in a virtual space, logging in from anywhere, day or night, over the course of several weeks. A faculty member guides the group through new material, moderates discussions and provides individual feedback.

This archived Online Group Seminar was originally available on:
January 17 to February 7, 2017

Pulitzer Prize-winner Lane DeGregory will walk you through the process of finding and telling powerful feature stories. In this four-week course you'll learn what elements you need, how to unearth things to write about, how to take notes, establish an intimate interview, frame a scene and find your voice. Gain insight on how to write – and edit – your stories.

Along the way, we will workshop some ideas, share some leads and hear some narratives – both published and in-the-works.

Live events will be on Tuesdays (Jan. 17, 24, 31, Feb. 7) from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Eastern.

What Will I Learn:
  • The elements of a good feature story
  • How to pitch stories to possible subjects
  • Interviewing skills
  • How to determine and establish a story's tone
  • How to organize and outline your story
  • Writing and editing tips
Who should take this course:

Whether you’re a beginning reporter or a seasoned veteran, a college student, staff writer or freelancer, if you cover government, breaking news, sports, business or a variety of subjects – or if you’re searching for stories to sell – this seminar is for you.

Course Instructor:

Lane DeGregory

Lane DeGregory is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Tampa Bay Times feature writer who prefers writing about people in the shadows. She went to work with a 100-year-old man who still swept out a seafood warehouse, hung out beneath a bridge with a colony of sex offenders and followed a feral child who was adopted.
