About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

This webinar will cover what you need to know about animation in journalism — the difference between animation and motion graphics; how those skill sets can be applied in a newsroom; what resources a motion graphics person needs to do the job; and some strategies that will help you communicate a detailed vision of what you want, keeping revisions to a minimum.

The bulk of this webinar will cover process from the beginning of an idea to the final product. This process can be used for short one-minute pieces or mini-documentaries. The instructor, Arielle Ray, will go over her own scripts to show you what editing looks like. She'll share her method of planning visuals for a project. She'll provide examples, ranging from timely news pieces that took only an afternoon to finish to larger explainers on things like NAFTA and encryption, projects that took a few weeks to execute.

You'll also learn a few tips and tricks for making graphics, where to find resources for more in-depth learning and which applications are best and fastest for news graphics.

Course Instructor:

Arielle Ray

Arielle brings Quartz's stories to life using animation, stop motion and video editing. She works on every subject matter under the sun, from NAFTA, to breastplates, to creepy artificial intelligence apps. Previously, she worked at The Wall Street Journal, covering equally varied subject matter using motion graphics. Arielle graduated from the University of Miami with degrees in Visual Journalism and English literature in 2014 and completed her art minor while studying abroad in Florence, Italy. She has yet to meet a grilled cheese that she doesn't like.
