About Online Group Seminars
In an online group seminar, you will gather with other participants in a virtual space, logging in from anywhere, day or night, over the course of several weeks. A faculty member guides the group through new material, moderates discussions and provides individual feedback.
- January 20 to February 17, 2017
This In-Depth Editing online group seminar is for experienced editors who are seeking to move their work to a new level. You'll hone your skills and edit strategically, going beyond editing for style, grammar and punctuation.
When you're done, you will have expertise in substantive editing and learned how to use critical thinking skills across multiple platforms and disciplines. You'll also get coaching and feedback from the experts at the American Copy Editors Society.
The online group seminar will take place over four weeks, with one live session per week:
- Week 1: Critical Thinking (Live session: Monday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. Eastern)
- Week 2: Improving Organization (Live session: Monday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m. Eastern)
- Week 3: Editing for Multiple Platforms (Live session: Monday, Feb. 6, at 4 p.m. Eastern)
- Week 4: Coaching and Managing the Writer and the Work (Monday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m. Eastern)

Merrill Perlman is a consultant who works with news organizations, private companies and journalism organizations, specializing in editing and the English language. She spent 25 years at The New York Times in jobs ranging from copy editor to director of copy desks, in charge of all 150-plus copy editors at The Times. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and writes the Language Corner column for the Columbia Journalism Review. Merrill is a recipient of the Glamann Award from the American Copy Editors Society. She was a reporter for four years before becoming an editor.
Sue Burzynski Bullard teaches editing, reporting and multimedia classes. She joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty in August 2008 after a year as a visiting editor-in-residence at Michigan State University.
Before heading to the classroom, Sue held a variety of editing positions during 21 years at The Detroit News, including three years as managing editor. In that role, she was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the newsroom. She supervised nearly 300 journalists and helped to integrate print and online newsrooms.
